Bisque firing
The first kiln firing, which turns dry unfired clay into a hard, porous ceramic material ready to accept glaze.
Bisque firing is the transformation that turns clay from a fragile, water soluble material into an actual ceramic. Fired to a relatively low temperature, commonly around cone 06 to cone 04 depending on the clay body and the studio's preference, the kiln drives off the last chemically bound water and burns out any organic material left in the clay, permanently changing its structure. The piece that comes out is called bisque or bisqueware, and it is hard, but still porous and slightly absorbent, almost like a firm sponge.
That porosity is the entire point of bisque firing rather than jumping straight to a single hotter firing. Porous bisque soaks up water quickly, which is exactly the behavior needed for dipping, pouring, or brushing glaze evenly, since the glaze's water is drawn into the clay while the solid particles cling to the surface. Skipping straight to glaze firing on raw clay is possible in some single fire approaches, but it is far less forgiving for anyone still learning to control glaze thickness and application.
A common point of confusion for beginners is treating cone numbers as fixed universal rules, when in practice a clay body's recommended bisque range and its final maturing range are two different numbers, both usually listed by the clay manufacturer. Loading a bisque kiln also allows pieces to touch or even stack inside each other since there is no glaze yet to fuse them together, unlike a glaze firing where pieces must never touch. Checking a clay body's data sheet before choosing a bisque temperature avoids under firing, which leaves ware too fragile and dusty, or over firing, which can make it too dense to absorb glaze well.
